Goals from Jurijs Žigajevs and Maris Verpakovskis saw Latvia complete a FIFA World Cup qualifying Group 2 double over their guests following a 4-0 win in Luxembourg on Saturday.
Effort disallowed The visitors had the better of a sluggish opening period, with Andris Vaņins forced to pluck the ball away from the onrushing Rene Peters after Mathias Janisch's headed 20th-minute ball sent him through on goal, and Peters also tested the FK Ventspils goalkeeper with a free-kick. Having lost forward Ģirts Karlsons to injury early on, Aleksandrs Starkovs's side took time to recover, but his replacement Andrejs Perepļotkins had an effort disallowed for offside before the hosts took the lead, with Verpakovskis beating three opponents before setting up Žigajevs to score.
Simple finish Claudio Lombardelli might have levelled on 50 minutes, but shot wide when well placed, while Žigajevs – inspired by scoring his first international goal – tried his luck from distance on the hour but Jonathan Joubert punched his effort away. Aleksandrs Cauņa then failed to score after going one-on-one with Joubert, but Latvia's dominance finally paid off when Verpakovskis scored his 24th international goal from Cauņa's corner. Latvia visit Israel in their next qualifier on 5 September while Luxembourg visit Moldova on the same day.
