Latvia cruised to a 4-0 victory at the Josy Barthel Stadium in Luxembourg to keep their chances of progressing from 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying Group 2 alive.
Return fixture Aleksandrs Starkovs side earned themselves a half-time advantage thanks to Girts Karlsons and stamped their authority on the contest after the break, when Aleksandrs Cauna, Aleksejs Višnakovs and Andrejs Pereplotkins all found the net. The victory moves Latvia on to seven points from five games, three ahead of a Luxembourg side they face again in Riga on Wednesday.
First international goal With Jurijs Žigajevs and Maris Verpakovskis having already gone close, it was no surprise when Karlsons headed Latvia in front on 23 minutes. The hosts fell further behind on 48 minutes as Cauna ended a swift counterattack with his first international goal before Vladimirs Koļesņičenko provided assists for two more efforts in the final 20 minutes, substitutes Višnakovs (71) and Pereplotkins (86) the beneficiaries.
