Both sides can feel reasonably satisfied after steady defensive performances saw this game in Cyprus finish goalless. Aleksandrs Starkovs's Latvia side started strongest, with RC Celta de Vigo striker Maris Verpakovskis twice denied by goalkeeper Grigor Meliksetyan before the break.

However, Jan B Poulsen's men recovered, and the second half was a more even affair, with both Meliksetyan and Andris Vanins having saves to make at either end. Yet diligent defending was to deny both sides a goal.
