On the 1 September former National Team defender, well known football player in Latvia - Mihails Zemlinskis was confirmed as new Latvian National U21 Team head coach. M.Zemlinskis was nominated to the post after his predecessor - Genādijs Šitiks, died of a heart attack at the age of 51.
M.Zemlinskis has played 105 matches in National Team defense and scored 12 goals in his National Team carrier. During his professional football player carrier in “Skonto FC” he won 13 Latvian Champion titles in a row until September 2005, when he played his last international farewell match Latvia – Japan (2:2). After the end of professional football player carrier, M.Zemlinskis became one of JFK Olimps coaches and in 2007 he accepted Daugavpils FC Daugava head coach post and won Latvian Cup in his first season and rights to play in Europa League qualification.
On the other news, most successful open football tournament for amateur teams finished in late summer, gathering the highest number of teams and spectators in four regions and final day at Skonto stadium. “Mitava Open” was organized by the most successive Latvian rock band “Brainstorm”, supported by Latvian Football Federation (LFF) and a total of 178 teams played in six stages in all Latvian regions.
