Latvian U-19 Youth national team on Tuesday, October 7th won the deciding matchup against homeside Moldova (1:0) in the European U-19 championship qualifying campaign and secured the second place in the group that sends latvians to the next qualifying round.
Head coach Vladimirs Beļajevs side scored two and lost two in the first match against Italy, then latvians were beaten by group winners Russian 0:2. Last matchday decided who will get the second place in the overall standings. Latvia scored it's only and winning goal on 18th minute of the first half after strike from Armands Pētersons.
The second match between Russia and Italy finished with russians victory by 1:0, that ruined all hopes for "squadra azzurra", but opened the door for Latvia to the next qualifying round in April, 2009.
