Second division Traffic League kicks-off

Saturday, 28 April is the start of the second division football tournament in Latvia, which for the first time in history has obtained a sponsor - Traffic outdoor advertising agency. Hence the new name "Traffic First League".

First games of the Traffic First League take place in Riga, Daugavpils, Rezekne, Ilukste, Smiltene and Ventspils.

Traffic has plans to invest up to 30 000 EUR in developing tournament by covering the costs of team licensing and registration, also cooperationg in stadium visual lay out reorganization.

First time First League has 16 teams playing: SK “Blazma” (Rezekne), FK “Jelgava”, FK “Zibens/Zemessardze” (Ilukste), FK “Valmiera”, FK “Tranzits” (Ventspils), FK “Multibanka” (Riga), FK “Auda” (Riga), FK “Abuls” (Smiltene), FK “Ilukste/BJSS”, FK “Jauniba-Parex” (Riga), JFK “Kauguri-PBLC” (Jurmala), RFS “Flaminko” (Riga), FK “Daugava-90” (Riga), FK “Tukums 2000”, FS “Metta/LU” (Riga), FK “Vindava” Ventspils. Teams are going to play a two round tournament and figth for place in the highest division - “LMT Virsliga 2008”.

Last year JFK Olimps won the First League title and got a ticket to “LMT Virslīga 2007”, but SK “Blazma” (FK “Rēzeknes Dižvanagi”) took the 8th place and fell out from LMT Virsliga 2006. This year club from Rezekne will play in “Traffic First League”. Also it is gratifying that in First League there is a university team - FS “Metta/LU” from Riga. LFF hopes that in the nearest future football and chance to play at high level will encourage other universities in Latvia to build their clubs to participate in Latvian football championships.
